“Rani” is also attached to a few specific, and very different, mango cultivars:

Rani Pasand (“Queen’s Favorite”): An heirloom variety from Bengal, India, dating back to the 18th-century era of the Nawabs.

Taste: Small, round, sweet, and fiberless with a thin, smooth yellow skin.

Name Origin: Legend says it was the favorite mango of a Nawab’s best-loved wife (“Rani”).

Rani Thellakayala: A commercial mango plant variety sold by nurseries, indicating it is a distinct type of mango tree grown for its fruit.

Rani Ramanna (Cucumber Mango): A very unique variety from Chhattisgarh, India.

Taste: Unlike any other, it’s eaten raw and tastes bland, tart, and like a cucumber or coconut. Once it ripens, it gets infested with insects and becomes inedible.
